DECEMBER 2000

This was a busy month, filled with parties, golf, eating out, Christmas shopping and taking Maxx to the vet.

Early in the month Maxx had stopped eating for several days so on the 8th, we took him to the vet and had blood drawn for various tests. Since hypothyroidism is common in Basenji's, we had tests run for that as well as for Valley Fever which is prevalent in the desert Southwest.

The blood tests for the hypothyroidism came back okay, but one of the tests they run for the Valley Fever included a liver enzyme test and Maxx's liver enzymes were really high. We took Maxx back to the vet the next day to have a liver function test done. The following Tuesday, we took Maxx back to have more blood drawn for a blood clotting test in preparation for a liver biopsy (this test must be done because if his blood didn't clot, or clotted very slowly, he could bleed to death when the liver biopsy was done).

The blood clotting test came back fine so on Friday, the 15th, Maxx had an "ultrasound-guided liver biopsy" done. The results of this biopsy showed "nonspecific inflammatory response" and "lymphocyte infiltration" plus a smaller-than-normal liver. What all this means is that they really don't know exactly what is wrong with Maxx's liver. The vet said that the type of damage seen in Maxx's liver is usually seen as a result of a drug overdose. Maxx did take a drug for a urine infection he had a couple of years ago, but the vet didn't think that would have caused this.

It's my belief that Maxx's liver problem could be a result of the monthly heartworm pill he's been taking...especially since his dosage was increased last year because Maxx had gained weight. The vet denies that this could be the case, but Basenji's are a very ancient breed and are genetically different than most other dogs...drugs that don't affect other dogs can play havoc on a Basenji's immune system. Many vets know nothing about Basenji's and I've had to insist on some things with our vet. For example, the tests that most labs run for hypothyroidism consists of only two different tests when the complete panels of tests that should be run consists of six different tests. I insisted that these six tests be run. I've also insisted on getting a prescription for the daily heartworm pill. This was a major hurdle as the vet saw no need for it and, in fact, wasn't even sure it was still being manufactured (it is). His one concern was whether or not I'd remember to give him his pill daily...well, duh!, I remember to feed him every day, don't I?

Maxx was prescribed a couple of different pills and is on a low protein diet. Once he completes this course of treatment, we'll take him back for another blood test to see how his liver enzymes are doing. In the meantime, he's back to eating and acting like his regular self.

We attended several parties this month. Buck and Phyllis Draughn had a Christmas party on the 15th which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we couldn't stay as long as we might have otherwise, because the party was on the same day that Maxx had his liver biopsy and we didn't want to leave him alone for very long after this procedure.

On Christmas Eve, we went to a party at John and DeAnne Cooper's house. DeAnne is a high school classmate of Earl's (as is Phyllis) and they've just recently moved to the Phoenix area from Washington State. Everyone brought two gifts...one for a man and one for a woman...and we had a gift exchange which was good for lots of laughs.

Christmas Day, we had a brunch at Joe and Kay Devita's house (Kay is another of Earl's high school classmates). Of course, we ate too much at all these parties, so come the New Year, we're going to have to "try" to loose some weight. Hah!

We had a very nice Christmas...I got a CD burner, a digital camera, and headphones with which to listen to TV. Earl got a golf club, some golf shirts, and an electric razor.

Earl continued golfing every Wednesday at Villa De Paz Men's Club and, on Monday's, he and Buck usually played golf someplace...Falcon, Maryvale, and Estrella Mountain Golf Clubs being favorites.

NOVEMBER 2000

Arizona Sunset

View from our rig

This update will be mercifully short! ;-)

We arrived at Cotton Lane RV Resort, located a few miles west of Goodyear, on November 1.

We've been enjoying staying put for awhile and, of course, I've been enjoying having Internet access so I can surf to my heart's content. Earl is back golfing with the Villa De Paz Men's Club on Wednesday mornings plus golfing at some of the other courses around the area. We've both been busy taking care of seeing doctors for our annual physical exams -- except for dentists and eye doctors; we decided we'd go to Palomas, Mexico (south of Deming, New Mexico) for those two exams after we leave here early next year.

We've visited with my mother who is recovering nicely from her recent hip replacement surgery. My sister, Randi, prepared a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at her house this year and we all had a very nice time.

We've been to Buck and Phyllis Draughn's house for dinner and a game of dominoes (we stayed at their place in Woodinville this summer when we attended the annual picnic for Earl's high school graduating class). Other friends, John and DeAnne Cooper (DeAnne is another of Earl's high school classmates), just recently moved down here from Washington State and they had a get together at their place where we had dinner and played more dominoes.

And, of course, we've been making the rounds of the restaurants we miss when we're traveling -- Takamatsu, a Koren and Japanese restaurant; Japan Express, a Japanese "fast food" restaurant; and Schlotzsky's. Although we do occasionally run into a Schlotzsky's in our travels, we don't do so nearly often enough. Haven't made it to some of our other favorite restaurants yet -- like Lilly's, a Mexican food restaurant in Glendale.

OCTOBER 2000

Tuesday, October 3

We drove 176 miles to Pioneer RV Park in Guthrie, Oklahoma which is just north of Oklahoma City. We decided to stop here for the night so that we could make it through downtown Oklahoma City after the morning rush hour was over. After we parked, we did grocery shopping.

Wednesday, October 4

We made it through Oklahoma City this year without any problems (last year, someone cut in front of us and ran over some road debris which went under the pickup and hit the generator door on the fifth wheel, bending it). We drove 202 miles to Post Oak Place RV Park in Denton, Texas. Before stopping at the RV park, however, we stopped at Camping World to pick up supplies. After we parked, we decided to go out to dinner and tried Mexican food at the Mercado Juarez Cafe which was very good.

Thursday, October 5

We had breakfast at Cracker Barrel, stopped at Home Depot to pick up filters and other supplies, and then drove 121 miles to Sun Country Resort in Whitney, Texas. Sun Country Resort, our home Coast to Coast park.

Friday, October 6

We drove into Waco to do shopping, including the purchase of a new lap top since I haven't been able to get AOL to work properly on the laptop I'd had to reformat. We stopped for lunch at Olive Garden while we were in town.

Tuesday, October 10

We've been taking it pretty easy while we've been at Sun Country Resort, resting up from the mad dash across country from Seattle to Goshen, Indiana for the Fall Escapade, the worrying over our king pin problem (well, I worried about it), and the New Horizons Owner's rally in Manhattan, Kansas. It's nice just to sit around and not do much of anything (although I did do the September update for our web site). Today, Earl went golfing at the Whitney Lake Golf Club and then we went out to dinner at The Ranch Mexican Restaurant where we had some so-so Mexican food.

Maxx taking it easy, too!

Thursday, October 12

We drove 156 miles to White's RV Park in Clyde, Texas, a Camper Clubs of America park.

Friday, October 13

Yikes! Friday the 13th! Oh well, we're not superstitious (are we?). We drove 260 miles to Trapark RV Park in Pecos, Texas, an Escapees park.

We decided to try the same restaurant we'd been to the last time we were in Pecos because we'd had such a good meal there...Sandra's Tejano Steakhouse. I tried to remember what I'd had the last time that was so good, but what I ordered (Chili Rellenos), either wasn't what I'd ordered the last time, or they'd changed the way it was prepared. Actually, the Chili Rellenos were good, but they were really, really HOT! I like hot foods, but these were too hot, even for me.

Sunday, October 15

We drove 233 miles to El Paso West RV Park in Anthony, New Mexico...just a few miles west of El Paso, Texas.

Monday, October 16

Drove 86 miles to Dream Catcher RV Park in Deming, New Mexico, an Escapee park. We went out to dinner at K Bob's Steakhouse where we had an excellent meal.

Neighbors at SKP Park

We drove to Willcox, Arizona expecting to spend the night in Brewer's Truck Repair's lot so we could have our truck serviced in the morning (oil and filter changes, etc.). However, when we got there and unhooked, they came and got the truck and did the service right then. It was still early when they finished, so we decided to go on to the Saguaro Co-Op in Benson, Arizona (an Escapee park). Total mileage for the day: 180.

We checked to see where we were on the Hot List (the list for purchasing a lot at the park)...we'd gone from 180-something last year when we signed up to 137 now. If it keeps up at this rate, we should be able to purchase a lot in about 3 years.

We had dinner at Galleano's where we had an excellent Italian dinner.

Another week of taking it easy...we did grocery shopping, went out to dinner at the Chute-Out Steakhouse, and ate lunch at Galleano's and at Country Folks restaurants.

Thursday, October 26 - Tuesday, October 31

Drove 129 miles to Rover's Roost SKP Co-Op, another Escapees park, in Casa Grande, Arizona. Had breakfast at Country Folks on our way out of Benson. We stopped at the Costco in Tucson to do much needed stocking up of supplies. We had another week (6 days really) of taking it easy. Earl went golfing at Francisco Grande Resort, we had lunch at the Golden Corral, breakfast at Mom's Cafe, and did grocery shopping.
